The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking qualified applicants for a crocodilian research biologist position in the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI). This position will be stationed in Gainesville, FL but field work will take place throughout the state.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
Conducts and assists with alligator night-light surveys, egg collections, alligator/crocodile captures, and other research-related activities. This includes traveling to locations across the state for extended periods of time and working outdoors in extreme weather conditions in isolated locations during the day and night.
Enters, proofs, and maintains data and metadata.
Conducts outreach and education activities.
Manages, trains, and ensures the safety of volunteers that you oversee.
Prepares and maintains vehicles, vessels, field supplies, office equipment, and alligator facilities. This includes the caretaking of eggs and live alligators, as well as the maintenance of incubation facilities and alligator enclosures.
Attends trainings, conferences and symposiums as needed to stay well-versed in current scientific crocodilian research.
Keeps maintenance records on vehicles, vessels, and equipment.
Performs various routine administrative tasks as required, including work timekeeping, vehicle and travel reports, purchases necessary supplies, and purchase processing.
Work hours will vary, and will include daytime and nighttime schedules.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences.
Valid Driver License
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, wildlife/natural resource management or other related natural science field.
Previous field experience, paid or unpaid.
Experience working with crocodilians or other herpetological species.
Experience with the operation, maintenance and repair of outboard boats or other similar motor vessels, 4WD trucks, and trailering vessels.
A strong interest in wildlife and natural resource conservation and research, especially in herpetology.
Experience with organizing, training, and supervising volunteers.
Experience with animal husbandry, especially with reptiles or other herpetological species.
Enthusiasm and interest in participating in outreach events and interacting with members of the public.
*Preference may be given to those who have any of the above preferred qualifications or those with ArcGIS, MS Access experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to use personal computers and various software, including ArcGIS, MS Access and other Microsoft Office Suite products.
Organizational skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to maintain effective working relationships with other biologists and coworkers and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team.
Knowledge of data collection procedures, data management, and quality control.
Ability and willingness to work long hours safely in the field under extreme weather conditions and in isolated locations.
Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including hours during both the day and night.
Knowledge of aquatic and wetland ecosystems of the southeastern United States.
Ability to operate and maintain airboats.
WHAT IS OPS EMPLOYMENT? Other Personal Services (OPS) temporary employer/employee relationship used solely for accomplishing short term or intermittent tasks. OPS employees do not fill established positions and may not be assigned the duties of any vacant authorized position. OPS employees are at-will employees and are subject to actions such as pay changes, changes to work assignment and terminations at the pleasure of the agency head or designee.
