Location: Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, Okeechobee County, Florida Duration: March 11-August 30, 2019 Job Type: Seasonal Wage: $14/hour, 30-40 hours/week. Simple housing is provided. Application Deadline: January 15, 2019 (or until filled)

Job Description: Two seasonal field technicians are needed for the 2019 breeding season of the critically endangered Florida grasshopper sparrow (Savannarum ammodramus floridanus) at Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, part of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The applicants need previous experience conducting point counts and nest searching. Applicants must conduct early morning surveys 5 days a week in remote areas in the Preserve. Other duties include communicating with the other members of the sparrow team and park staff, nest protection (fences), behavior observation, data entry, habitat assessment, GIS analysis, maintenance, and habitat enhancement. The possibility exists to assist in mist netting and prescribed fire operations if qualified. There is an opportunity to receive basic wildland fire training the week before the start date. Applicants need to have a strong work ethic and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve is ~54,000 acres and the largest contiguous grassland east of the Mississippi River. It is home to over 30 listed species. The Preserve is remote with the closest grocery store being 45 minutes away.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) bachelor’s degree in wildlife, biological sciences, or related discipline with an interest in wildlife biology, restoration, or behavior; 2) current driver’s license with good driving record; 3) experience with 4X4 vehicles (ATVs, UTVs, trucks); 4) ability to identify all birds via only song/call/warble; 5) experience with GIS; 6) nest searching and avian point count surveys; 7) GPS and navigation skills; 8) ability to tolerate high temperatures, humidity, wet feet; 9) ability to use chainsaws safely; 10) dedication, sensitivity, and attention to detail
