This is an exciting opportunity for a biologist to work for the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) operating a waterfowl check station during South Florida’s prime duck hunting season.
Specific duties of the check station operator (CSO) include opening the waterfowl hunting area gate,
checking in permitted hunters, conducting a lottery for unpermitted hunters, correctly identifying and
recording species harvested, compiling, reviewing, and reporting hunting pressure and harvest results in
Excel and via the internet, and preparing and distributing datasheets using Excel. The CSO will also work
some scout days prior to the beginning of each hunt phase. The CSO is responsible for representing the
agency in a professional manner while providing service to the public. There are currently 1-2 positions
available for the upcoming season.
FWC’s South Florida waterfowl check stations are situated on Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs). These
are in remote locations with no store/facilities nearby (there is a portable toilet at each site). CSOs operate
the check stations from 3:45 am until just after sunset (normal workdays run approximately 16-18 hours
per day). Days of operation include Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sundays depending on the assigned STA.
We are looking for a biologist who can work from November through early February (including holidays).
Free state housing is available if needed. The state housing is located on Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife
Management Area in Hendry County approximately 14 miles west of STA 5. In addition, a state vehicle will
be provided for driving to/from the assigned STA(s).
For candidates interested in long term careers with FWC, working at an STA is a great way to become
familiar with our agency and highlight your knowledge and skills as a biologist.
Qualifications: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in one of the life sciences, reliable
transportation, a reliable cell phone, and the ability to work long hours independently once trained.
Applicants with waterfowl experience preferred but basic waterfowl ID training is provided if needed.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is also preferred.
