Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma and two years of post-high school experience in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction are required.

Vocational training or an associate’s degree in wildlife, fisheries, environmental, ecological or related agriculture or construction from an accredited school or college may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Candidate must be 18 years old and obtain a valid U.S. driver’s license.

 Position Overview and Responsibilities:

  • Position will be responsible for conducting on-the-water surveys.

  • Incumbent will collect angler effort, catch, and harvest data via verbal angler interviews for freshwater fish species.

  • Incumbent will count and interview every angler encountered in a polite and professional manner. Incumbent will follow a predefined interview protocol.

  • These positions may be responsible for accurately recording detailed survey data while operating a boat independently and safely.

  • Incumbent may be responsible for operating FWC equipment (ex. trucks, trailers, and motorboats) for FWC business only and in a safe and law-abiding manner.

  • Surveys will be conducted in all-weather types including hot, cold, windy, and/or rainy conditions if conditions are not dangerous.

Schedule:

Availability: Shifts are scheduled via random selection, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Each survey is 3 hours long before daylight savings time and 4 hours long after.  Earliest shift is 7:30-10:30, latest shift is 16:00-20:00 (4:00-8:00pm). Average of 3 shifts per week but can be 1 shift one week and 5 shifts the following week. The entire schedule will be known at the beginning of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities   

  • Knowledge of Florida freshwater sportfish species and general angling terminology; and general small boat troubleshooting.

  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with the public in a polite and professional manner. 

  • Follow explicit interview protocols. 

  • Accurately and legibly record and safely store data, and work independently. 

  • Work irregular weekday and weekend work periods, often in inclement weather. 

  • Maintain a valid driver’s license. 

  • Provide own transportation to and from work locations.

Description of Duties:

The Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site Biologist has the opportunity to work on a dynamic team and positively affect gopher tortoise conservation throughout Florida. The position is located within the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) Division of Habitat and Species Conservation, in the Office of Conservation Planning Services. The position is a critical member of FWC’s gopher tortoise conservation program, working to conserve Florida’s only native tortoise and is responsible for assisting landowners and their gopher tortoise agents during the pre-application process. This is an office-based position with significant field work opportunities.  

The main function of this position will be to conduct recipient site pre-application consultations and site visits. The Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site Biologist will be responsible for providing assistance to public and private land managers and their agents before they submit an application to enroll their property as a recipient site. This position will thoroughly review pre-application materials including soil and vegetation maps and surveys, gopher tortoise population surveys, and habitat management plans.  The position will also require coordination of site visits, extensive verbal and written communication with landowners and their agents, and coordination with Landowner Assistance Program staff to assess vegetative conditions and provide habitat management recommendations.

The selected candidate will be expected to inform and respond to the public, partners, and FWC staff on gopher tortoise and commensal biology, conservation, and rules/regulations. The position requires working closely with other biologists, who serve as a liaison between other partners and FWC on the establishment of recipient sites and who implement permitting actions using FWC permitting standards. The selected candidate will also help determine gopher tortoise occurrences via the agency’s standard survey methods, as well as verify estimated population sizes and the area extent (acres) of habitat suitability and occupation.

The selected candidate will work across FWC divisions and with other federal, state, regional, and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and others as appropriate to implement the Gopher Tortoise Management Plan. They will assist and collaborate with regional and statewide staff and provide technical assistance to individuals, organizations, and other government agencies regarding wildlife and habitat management including gopher tortoise conservation. This position will stay informed of current and relevant science and regulations regarding gopher tortoises and commensals; participate in, and often lead, team meetings, seminars, outreach events, and workshops relating to wildlife resource management; and attend other training opportunities within and outside the FWC. Position will require frequent overnight travel and working outside of normal business hours.

Description:

The Land Conservation and Planning (LCP) program offers an exciting opportunity in land conservation planning, working closely with land managers and stakeholders across the state to complete ten-year management plans for FWC managed conservation lands (i.e., 59 areas, over 1.5 million acres).

This program is responsible for the administration and implementation of the FWC’s land acquisition and land management planning programs and projects statewide. The position advertised is for the Senior Conservation Planner in the Wildlife and Habitat Management section of the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation of FWC, supervising three planners to complete management plans; reviewing and commenting on other agencies’ management plans and Acquisition and Restoration Council (ARC) agenda items; as well as working closely with the land acquisition team on FWC’s acquisition list and State priority projects.

Description of Duties: The FWC’s South Region is seeking a highly motivated biologist to assist with the management of Everglades and Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area (WMA) located in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade Counties. This position serves as a wildlife biologist on a team to restore and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of wildlife and for the enjoyment of Florida’s residents and visitors.

Primary responsibilities are assisting with the planning, development, and implementation of hydrologic, habitat, and wildlife management programs for the WMA. This includes the application of prescribed fire, conducting and providing oversight for invasive vegetation control, restoration and management of tree islands, assisting in the development and promotion of public use programs including both hunting and non-hunting uses, and helping to set management and restoration objectives consistent with agency and division directives.

Additionally, this position will assist with conducting wildlife and vegetation surveys, collecting biological data from hunter-harvested animals, coordinating and implementing managed public hunts on both the WMA and Stormwater Treatment Areas, preparing and submitting administrative and biological reports, supervising seasonal staff, maintaining equipment in a safe and usable condition, and furthering agency goals through interactions with cooperating agencies and stakeholders. The position will regularly work independently in the field. Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This position is part of a regional team with FWC’s Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management (DFFM) and is located in Lakeland, FL. This position is primarily responsible for representing DFFM on freshwater fisheries resources and aquatic habitat issues on lake’s Istokpoga, Placid, June-in-Winter, Josephine, Jackson and other waterbodies within Highlands County.

The incumbent will represent DFFM on the Lake Istokpoga Management Committee as well as participate in stakeholder groups such as the Friends of Istokpoga and Lake Istokpoga Working Group. Incumbent will facilitate the development of interagency partnerships, stakeholder relationships, and cooperative agreements with local governments in order to protect, manage, and enhance fisheries resources. Incumbent will establish and maintain stakeholder contacts with anglers, fish camps, local governmental officials, tackle shop owners, fishing guides, outdoor media, fishing clubs, NGOs, etc. to ensure effective, two-way communication with regard to FWC programs and projects. The incumbent will also serve as DFFM representative on various intra- and inter-agency groups.

 This position will also be responsible for the management of freshwater fisheries resources within FWC’s Southwest Region (12 counties) as needed. Management activities include fisheries sampling, water quality sampling, investigating fish kills, angler surveys, and aquatic habitat restoration activities.

The incumbent will coordinate with the Southwest Regional Freshwater Fisheries Administrator, Division of Fish and Wildlife Research Institute – Freshwater Fisheries Research (FWRI-FFR) staff and Division of Habitat and Species Conservation (HSC) staff to develop aquatic restoration, enhancement, aquatic plant management, and other projects that emphasize improving or maintaining sport fish populations, angler access or the creation of new fishing opportunities. Incumbent will coordinate with HSC - Aquatic Habitat Restoration and Enhancement Section staff as well as HSC - Invasive Plant Management personnel to maintain expertise in those areas and ensure that DFFM’s interests are considered when planning projects and other work on freshwater resources.

 The incumbent will help oversee implementation of the Lake Istokpoga Habitat Management Plan in conjunction with stakeholders, FWRI-FFR and HSC staff.  Design, supervise and implement biological studies on aquatic resources, implement agency established protocols to assess sportfish populations, compile, analyze and interpret biological data and compile technical reports.  The person selected for this position will be required to regularly interact with individuals from within and outside the agency, as well as the public.

 The incumbent will assist with agency outreach and promotional programs including TrophyCatch at community events, state fairs and outdoor expos.  Provides information to the public through presentations, publications, correspondence and media contacts.

  • Position will be responsible for safely storing and delivering collected creel data to supervisor.

  • This position is temporary, and the surveys run from December 2025-May 2026

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The incumbent will serve as a project lead on spiny lobster, benthic ecology, and fisheries research projects using appropriate experimental designs in the Florida Keys. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading and participating in research in field and laboratory research.

  • Collecting data on distribution, abundance, size structure, growth, and other population characteristics and fisheries issues using above water and underwater sampling techniques.

  • Seek out and prepare high quality proposals for outside funding agencies. Manage funded projects from various sources (state, grants, and contracts).

  • The employee will prepare reports for fishery managers and other scientists and publish manuscripts suitable for peer reviewed publications and management activities.

  • Establish and maintain close relationships with other SFRL researchers and researchers outside of FWC to ensure the FWC research is relevant to the fishery and ecosystem management needs of the Florida Keys.

  • Additional duties include seeking out and preparing high quality proposals for outside funding agencies, performing other related work as required, assisting in other institute activities as requested, as well as promoting and participating in public outreach efforts.

  • Field work is conducted underwater and will require maintaining FWRI/AAUS diver status and participation in SCUBA and operating vessels.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to design and implement research studies, coordinate and analyze data, and perform statistical analysis.

  • Coordinate work assignments and prepare technical reports and manuscripts.

  • Knowledge in the use of PCs, R, (or a PC advanced statistical package); MS office software.

  • Safely trailer and operate vessels up to 25’ in length.

  • Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, principles and procedures used in personnel & budget administration.

  • Maintain SCUBA certification, a valid driver’s license, and demonstrate the ability to swim with sufficient skill to save oneself in an emergency.

  • Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing and establish and maintain working relationships with others.

  • Deal effectively with the public and supervise people.
