Description of duties: Assists with the planning, development and implementation of management programs for Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area. Assists with the development and implementation of habitat management programs to maintain and perpetuate native wildlife populations. These programs include activities such as prescribed fire, and mechanical and chemical control of native and exotic vegetation. Other responsibilities include: coordination and implementation of managed public hunts; providing management recommendations to cooperating agencies to promote the conservation of wildlife resources; design and implementation of biological surveys to monitor the status of selected species, including data analysis and report writing; development and implementation of public recreational programs; proposing regulations based on sound biological and sociological principles; development and implementation of scientifically appropriate monitoring programs; preparation and submission of administrative and biological reports; planning, development, and maintenance of projects to facilitate public use including road construction, establishment of parking areas, culvert installation, and construction and maintenance of boundary and interior fences and gates; supervising various OPS staff; and furthering agency goals through interactions with cooperating agencies and stakeholders.
KSA: Wildlife ecology; ecosystem management; fire ecology and plant succession; applied knowledge of the principles and practices of habitat management and restoration, including prescribed fire, mechanical and chemical vegetation control, and exotic plant control; ability to identify common and imperiled species, and understand their habitat and life history requirements; ability to write technical reports; wildlife and habitat survey and inventory knowledge; ability to collect and analyze biological data; ability to design statistically sound monitoring projects; water management; timber management; budget management; proficiency with typical Windows applications including ArcGIS; geospatial referencing; familiarity with infrastructure development and maintenance; familiarity with outdoor recreational activities and the facilities needed to support them; ability to organize work and set priorities; and ability to operate outdoors under inclement weather conditions. Incumbent must possess the initiative, motivation, and self-direction necessary to work productively unsupervised alone as well as function as a member of a team.
