D2 PINE Team

(Prescribed Ignition of Natural Ecosystems)

 

The Bureau of Parks District 2 Administration is currently seeking to hire OPS fire management technicians for the District 2 fire management team. This team will assist with Prescribed Fire Management and Wildfire Suppression on park lands in North Central Florida. The team is based out of the Gainesville District Office.  This is an excellent opportunity to begin your fire career or expand your knowledge and experience while helping us in accomplishing this critical area of resource management.

 

Jeff DiMaggio, District 2 Fire Management Officer, will oversee all aspects of the team from logistics to scheduling to administration. The on the ground team will be coordinated by the Fire Team Crew Leader. The remaining team members will be comprised of employees with varying levels of burn experience.

 

We are looking for the following positions:

Work Schedule:      Four 10 Hour Days per Week

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

This position will travel throughout the District 2 area (occasionally statewide) participating in all aspects of the prescribed fire program. The team focus will be to aid park burn crews in prescribed burning with equipment and personnel. Since Wildland fire is seasonal in nature, there will be times when the team will complete resource projects in lieu of prescribed fire or wildfire suppression. In periods of extended dry conditions, suppression of wildfires and projects will be the focus.

 

The typical work shift will be four (4) ten-hour (10hr) work days, Monday through Thursday unless the crew is needed outside those days. Most days working on the fire line can exceed the 10hr standard shift. Since the primary duties of this team is assisting with wildland fire activities, crew members must be flexible to work outside of the Monday -Thursday time frame. During wildfire season, the crew can/will be deployed as a member of a Type 6 engine strike team or taskforce. While on deployment, workdays could extend to 16 hours with deployment lasting to 14 days.

 

Duties will include:

·       Operating a variety of wildland firefighting equipment.

·       Working under multiple fire managers and the Incident Command System.

·       Working in a variety of wildland fuels, locations and conditions.

·       Constructing fire lines using hand tools, chainsaws, farm tractors w/various

implements, and other heavy machinery.

·       Supplemental duties when prescribed burn or burn prep opportunities are

unavailable may include: mechanical or chemical treatment of invasive hardwoods or off-site pines, planting of native species at restoration sites.

·       Learning about prescriptions and burn planning.

·       This position will require extensive travel, some on short notice.

·       Ability to lift/carry 40 pounds.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION:

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

·       L180

·       S130/190

·       I100

·       Successfully Pass the Moderate Pack Test

·       Pass the Annual Fire Shelter Review or RT130

·       Participation in 3 or more Burns

·       Possession of a Florida Class E driver’s license.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a valid Class E driver’s license.  Successful completion of annual moderate pack test.  Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced.  Pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25lbs in under 30 minutes.

 

HAZARDS AND/OR CAUTIONS

·       Working on the fire line in Florida’s hot and humid environment.

·       Workdays could extend to 16 hours with deployment lasting to 14 days.

·       Exposure to smoke, biting/stinging insects, venomous reptiles/insects,

poisonous plants, etc.

 

 

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR THE POSITION:

·       Knowledge of prescribed fire operations and wildfire suppression

techniques/tactics.

·       Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.

·       Skill in using various four-wheel drive vehicles including ATVs/UTVs.

·       Ability to solve/troubleshoot mechanical problems related to gasoline and diesel

engines.

·       Ability to organize and coordinate work assignments.

·       Ability to communicate effectively using email, VHF radios, telephones,

etc.

·       Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others.

·       Ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
