Join our professional team dedicated to the protection and preservation of Charlotte County’s wildlife and natural resources where every day is a different adventure.  With over 6000 acres of protected lands including wetlands and scrub habitat, our days are filled with projects such as scrub jay data collection, educational presentations on a variety of topics using tools such as Facebook Live, trail maintenance to ensure visitor safety and enjoyment, and a host of other responsibilities such as geo database maintenance, contractor oversight and long-term management goals.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and implements assigned habitat management plans: plans and conducts prescribed burns; identifies and treats exotic and invasive plants.

  • Conducts listed species surveys and flora monitoring; and maintains an inventory of listed species and vegetation communities within the County.

  • Organizes and analyzes data to be used for internal projects, county-wide projects, and for statewide agencies working to protect Florida's wildlife and natural resources.

  • Prepares and submits purchase requisitions and work orders for habitat management activities, such as fences, herbicides, and special events; and monitors related contracted work.

  • Prepares grants for natural resource protection: monitors and ensures adherence to grant requirements.

  • Conducts educational outreach: prepares, writes and distributes educational materials; and makes presentations to civic groups, schools, conferences, etc.

  • Leads volunteer groups involved in land management projects: identifies priorities and assigns work; and coordinates logistics and materials to complete projects.

  • Provide exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaints by all forms of communication.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

·         Bachelor’s degree in field of science education, natural sciences, ecology, wildlife conservation, or related field

·         Preferred: One (1) year of experience in environmental conservation, natural resource management or related field.

  • Or an equivalent combination of relevant training, education, and experience.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES: 

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license.

  • Must obtain and maintain the following land management certifications and licensures within 18 months of hire:

    • Basic Wildland Firefighter S-130/S-190

    • Natural Areas Pesticide Applicator through Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS)

    • Gopher Tortoise Agent through Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)
