The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position works within the Wildlife Habitat Management  Section of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Division of Habitat and Species Conservation. 

 Minimum Qualifications:

A High School Diploma and seven years experience in a relevant field.  A Bachelor's degree can substitute for four of the seven years experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred, along with three years of professional experience in planning, evaluation, research, analysis, business, government, social services, health or rehabilitative services, or fiscal work.

KSA’s (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities): 

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects under tight deadlines, while ensuring compliance with Florida Statutes and the Florida Administrative Code.

  • Strong public speaking and facilitation skills for conducting public meetings and presenting at public hearings related to the development of land management plans for state-owned conservation lands. Experience in this area is preferred.

Position description and duties: 

Description: 

The Land Conservation and Planning (LCP) program of the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section is responsible for the implementation and administration of the FWC’s land acquisition and management planning efforts. The program supports the protection and restoration of Florida’s wildlife habitats and natural resources through comprehensive planning, public engagement, and inter-agency coordination.

This position serves as a Land Conservation Planner (Planner IV) and will play a key role in managing land conservation planning projects, facilitating public meetings, conducting GIS analysis, and coordinating with the Acquisition and Restoration Council (ARC) and other state and regional partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate the development and updates of management plans for Wildlife Management Areas and Wildlife Environmental Areas, in collaboration with municipalities, stakeholders, FWC staff, and partner agencies such as the Florida Forest Service, Water Management Districts, and the Department of Environmental Protection.

  • Assist in maintaining and updating GIS data layers related to FWC-managed lands, Florida Forever conservation projects, and potential acquisition areas.

  • Plan and facilitate public stakeholder meetings and hearings required for the development of management plans, including logistical coordination, communication with internal and external partners, and preparation of meeting materials.

  • Represent FWC at ARC meetings, presenting management plans and engaging in inter-agency coordination.

  • Review management plans and amendments submitted by other agencies to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and policies.

  • Participate in Land Management Reviews for FWC-managed areas.

  • Support other program functions and special projects, such as acquisition project evaluations, Florida Forever prioritization efforts, procurement, and vehicle coordination.

Description of duties: The Division of Habitat and Species Conservation is comprised of six sections and two offices. This position is in the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section.

The FWC is seeking a highly motivated biologist to lead a team of Wildlife and Habitat Management Section staff on the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area (WMA) located in Palm Beach County, Florida. This Lead Area Biologist position will work as a team with other areas within the District or South Region to accomplish land management activities including prescribed burning and nonnative plant control.

In addition, responsibilities include identifying, planning, and implementing effective projects consistent with the Management Plan; developing and implementing annual budgets and work plans; ensuring equipment and infrastructure is properly maintained; providing oversight and participating in hydrologic and vegetative restoration projects; preparing for and conducting wildlife surveys; supporting and conducting public hunts on the WMA, as well as on the Stormwater Treatment Area(s) as needed; developing and promoting non-hunting recreational use; and maintaining land management and wildlife survey databases using ArcGIS.

This Lead Area Biologist position will work as a team with other WMAs within the District or South Region to accomplish management actions such as prescribed burning. The successful candidate will supervise two Fish & Wildlife Technicians, one Fisheries and Wildlife Biological Scientist II, and seasonal hunter check station operators as necessary. The successful candidate must occasionally attend regional and divisional meetings, various trainings, and assist on other management areas as needed. About the WMA: The J.W. Corbett WMA (60,498 acres) is home to a variety of wildlife, including red-cockaded woodpecker, American alligator, otter, sandhill crane, and white-tailed deer. Primary habitats include pine flatwoods, freshwater marshes, and cypress swamps. Prescribed burning and invasive plant control are two of the primary tools used to manage and improve the property for wildlife.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of Florida ecosystems and natural processes, wildlife ecology, ecosystem management, water management, fire ecology and plant succession. Applied knowledge of the principles and practices of habitat management and restoration, including prescribed fire, mechanical and chemical vegetation control, and invasive plant control. Wildlife habitat survey and inventory knowledge; ability to collect and analyze biological data. Ability to track spending and monitor budgets. Ability to create scientific reports free of grammatical and typographical errors. Ability to interact with stakeholders, co-workers, and cooperating agencies in a professional manner. Knowledge of hunting as a wildlife management tool. Familiarity with infrastructure development and maintenance. Familiarity with outdoor recreational activities and the facilities needed to support them. Proficiency with typical Windows applications and ArcGIS. Ability to effectively supervise staff. Well-organized, able to communicate effectively, and able to supervise and delegate tasks effectively. Ability to oversee multiple projects and set priorities. Incumbent must possess the initiative, motivation, and self-direction necessary to work productively independently as well as function as a member of a team. Ability to work outside under inclement weather conditions and operate specialized equipment (e.g., swamp buggy, ATV, UTV, tractor).

Minimum Qualifications:  Six years of professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory program is required.  A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field can substitute for four of the six years of required experience.

Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor of Science degree with a major in one of the life/physical sciences.  At least two years of experience in habitat and/or wildlife management. Supervisory experience. Florida Prescribed Burn Manager. Strong familiarity with both native and invasive vegetation in South Florida. Experience with habitat restoration work, wildlife surveys, and prescribed burning.

Description of duties:

The Division of Habitat and Species Conservation’s Office of Conservation Planning Services is seeking a fish and wildlife professional to serve in a coordination role for the Division’s shorebird and seabird conservation program.  The focus of this position is on improving conditions for Florida’s beach-nesting birds through coordination with staff to implement conservation actions.

The biologist in this position will have a lead role in implementing conservation measures and permitting guidelines for imperiled beach nesting birds.  Primary responsibilities will include working with subject matter experts to develop tools and resources to implement protection measures for imperiled beach nesting birds, building internal support throughout the agency, creating staff training materials and technical assistance resources, developing outreach and messaging for external partner agencies, and engaging with stakeholders.  The person in this role will coordinate the continuing implementation of regulatory protections and closely with other government entities and partner organizations.  

Successful candidates will have experience collaborating with entities of varying interests during state and federal regulatory processes and demonstrate strong skills in conflict management.  Candidates should also have experience providing leadership support to multiple teams, and strong organizational skills.  This position serves as staff in the Land Use Planning Program of the Office of Conservation Planning Services (OCPS) and as such will help to facilitate cross-divisional implementation of conservation measures and permitting guidelines for imperiled beach-nesting birds and other state-listed species.

Minimum qualifications:

This position requires advanced communication skills, ability to collaborate across workgroups and with other organizations, project management experience, and experience leading teams.  Knowledge of and experience with beach-nesting birds, imperiled species, and coastal ecosystems is highly preferred.  Desired minimum qualifications include:

  • Seven years of relevant experience. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field can substitute for four of the seven years of required experience.

  • Knowledge of Florida’s Threatened and Endangered species management system and associated rules.

  • Conservation project management experience. 

  • Strong leadership, facilitation, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders and to lead teams to project completion.  

  • Ability to provide clear, timely, and effective updates on multiple projects and efforts.  

  • Experience writing and reviewing technical documents, experience with programs that conserve imperiled species or their habitats, and familiarity with land use applications and/or permits.
