Position Summary

Reporting to Audubon’s Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries (FCIS) Senior Sanctuary Manager, the Coastal Biologist will be responsible for management of colonial wading bird colonies along the central Gulf Coast of Florida. The Coastal Biologist will be responsible for managing all aspects of FCIS’s breeding and nonbreeding season monitoring at over 80 locations, and for directly managing more than 28 island sites, in coordination with the Senior Sanctuary Manager. The Coastal Biologist will also develop new projects to reduce threats to birds on the sanctuary islands.  This position will recruit and manage volunteers for Project Colony Watch and other stewardship activities. The Coastal Biologist will collaborate with Audubon Florida, science, policy, and communications teams, as and collaborate with partners, including state and federal agencies, NGOs, and landowners, and communities.

 

This is a full-time, 40 hours a week hybrid position based out of the Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries office in Tampa, Florida.

Essential Functions

  • Lead Audubon Florida’s Coastal Island Sanctuaries nesting birds monitoring and stewardship activities.

  • Lead non-nesting surveys of shorebirds, seabirds, and other waterbirds and maintain game cameras to monitor islands

  • Coordinate and manage volunteers for Audubon’s Project Colony Watch and to conduct cleanups of the rookery islands to remove discarded fishing gear and other entangling debris.

  • Manage sanctuary islands including installing and maintaining sanctuary signs and managing predation and non-native vegetation.

  • Design and implement projects, with guidance from the Senior Sanctuary Manager, to advance FCIS’s conservation priorities, including reducing fishing gear entanglement, restoring native vegetation, and managing erosion with nature-based solutions.   

  • Manage field data, develop databases as necessary, perform analysis, report conclusions, and share data, including contributing to the Florida Shorebird Database and statewide waterbird database, and preparing annual data reports for the USFWS, FWC, and local and regional partners.

  • Develop grant proposals, manage and report on grants, and participate in other fundraising activities and interactions with donors in collaboration with the Senior Sanctuary Manager and other staff.

  • Cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with partners, including but not limited to Audubon chapters, state and federal agencies, other non-governmental organizations, and community and government leaders.

  • Engage with local and state law enforcement agencies and boaters to avoid and respond to trespass restrictions inside Critical Wildlife Areas.

  • Organize and lead boating tours for partners, donors, and the public.

  • Safely operate field equipment including trailering, launching and operating boats, and oversee maintenance of vehicles, boats, and trailers.

  • Maintain permits and access agreements with state and federal partners as well as private landowners.

  • Collaborate with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in biology, ecology, natural resource management, or a related field and at least 3 years of relevant experience in a similar field is required. An equivalent combination of experience and education will be considered.

  • 3 years of demonstrated experience and expertise in shorebird, seabird, and wading bird identification and research or professional experience in performing waterbird surveys strongly preferred.

  • Excellent work ethic, a team-focused attitude, and the ability to work well independently in the field and with others, including staff and volunteers, is required.

  • 1 year of professional experience with recruiting, training, and managing volunteers in a conservation program preferred.

  • Experience with boating, and trailering is strongly preferred.

  • Comfort with public speaking about wildlife ecology topics and the importance of protecting bird colonies.

  • Must be able to move 30 lbs., and traverse long distances miles on beach in summer field conditions carrying spotting scope, binoculars, and daypack with or without accommodation.

  • Proficiency in MS Office, comfortable in using other software applications and capacity to learn new software.

Description Of Duties: 
The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. The Aquatic Habitat Restoration/Enhancement Subsection (AHRE) of the Aquatic Habitat Conservation and Restoration Section is seeking an aquatic habitat restoration biologist to develop and manage projects on lakes, rivers, and wetlands to benefit fish and wildlife resources.  The position will work within the Central Florida AHRE multidisciplinary team, and independently.

This position is responsible for development of budget proposals, project specifications, contract management, and reporting. The position identifies aquatic habitat restoration/enhancement opportunities, secures internal or external project funding, hires and oversees contractors to complete habitat projects, and conducts assessment of project effectiveness.  In addition, the position will interact professionally with the public and partners providing technical expertise on aquatic habitat management. Occasional travel is required to attend regional and divisional meetings and trainings.

Required Duties Include But Are Not Limited to The Following:

  • Identify, develop, coordinate, and implement wetland and aquatic habitat restoration projects that maximize benefits to fish and wildlife resources

  • Removal of nuisance vegetation and organic sediments, herbicide treatment of aquatic plants, planting of beneficial wetland vegetation species and utilization of other wetland restoration techniques.

  • Procure necessary state and federal permits required for project implementation.

  • Develop project bid documents and contracts.

  • Provide contract management of approved aquatic habitat enhancement projects.

  • Provide contractor oversight of approved aquatic habitat enhancement projects.

  • Operation of drones for vegetation or wildlife management

  • Work across FWC divisions and cooperate with other federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and others as appropriate to implement FWC’s aquatic habitat restoration program.

  • Participate in and provide input to internal (FWC sponsored) and external (non-FWC sponsored) aquatic resource management groups.

  • Evaluate and predict environmental response to project activities in coordination with other FWC division, office, and section personnel.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

This is a professional position in the St. Lucie County Environmental Resources Department’s (ERD) Environmental Regulations Division. This position is responsible for evaluating and issuing environmental permits, conducting pre and post land clearing inspections, endangered species inspections, landscape inspections, and any other necessary site inspections. The Conservation Coordinator addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species and fosters cross-site learning among conservation community members. They develop and implement conservation strategies and secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. Additional duties include participating in community engagement, ensuring the maintenance of preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, coordinating multiple projects, serving as a training cadre member in Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) and partner stewardship courses, setting deadlines, and managing projects to completion. This position is part of the Stewardship and Field Program (SAF) and is located at the Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP) in Kissimmee, FL.

 

Essential functions include participating in a leadership capacity as a fire crew member during prescribed burns and wildfires, requiring the minimum TNC training and fitness standards for prescribed burning at an arduous level (ability to carry 45-pound pack 3 miles in less than 45 minutes). This also requires the regular use of ignition devices, fire control hand tools, and operation of Type 6/7 engines, tractors, and other fire suppression equipment. The Land Conservation Coordinator will implement invasive species control measures, lead work teams on stewardship projects, and represent TNC on regional working groups. Responsibilities also include assisting with rare species recovery, scientific monitoring, and coordinating the collection of spatial data and maintaining records for invasive species and treatments via GIS and mobile technology. The incumbent will serve as a core team member of the Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team, which assists partners with prescribed fire operations, invasive species control, collection of monitoring data and records in accordance with grant deliverables for reporting. The role ensures maintenance of tools, equipment, and infrastructure, conducts public outreach, and leads resource management trainings. The position supervises staff and interns, overseeing their performance, training, and recruitment. Work is performed in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule (i.e. ability to work weekends and holidays as necessary).
