DUTIES:

Responsible for organizing and conducting direct control operations to reduce wildlife damage within a geographical area or technical/subject area of program involvement.

 

Primary species of concern will be feral swine, conducting damage management through trapping and night operations.

 

Inspects and surveys areas and, as necessary, will revise existing WDM programs in close consultation with higher-level management.

 

Uses WDM tools/devices which may include some or all of the following depending on need in assigned area: firearms; foothold, body-grip, cage traps; foot snares; neck snares; chemical control methods; pyrotechnics; noise cannons/exploders; drop nets; rocket/cannon nets; various other scaring devices.

 

Assists Wildlife Biologists by correctly identifying current, and forecasting future damage, problems and relating them to the damage-causing species.

Position Summary

Audubon Florida seeks a Shorebird Biologist to support beach-nesting season bird conservation work in the Florida Panhandle. The Shorebird Biologist will work remotely in the Panama City region of Bay and Gulf counties and travel to complete the majority of work on and around beaches and islands including Tyndall Critical Wildlife Area, islands and beaches and adjacent to or within Tyndall Air Force Base and Eglin Cape San Blas.

This is a full-time seasonal position working 40 hours a week between February and August 2023 including some weekend days and holidays, such as Memorial Day and Independence Day. The Shorebird Biologist will be responsible for performing beach-nesting bird monitoring and protection work primarily in Bay and Gulf counties, Florida. Responsibilities include the following, in addition to other as-needed duties:


• Breeding surveys and nest searching for imperiled bird species including Snowy Plovers, Wilson’s Plovers, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers.
• Nonbreeding surveys for Piping Plovers, Red Knots, and other coastal bird species.
• Posting symbolic fencing around beach-nesting bird sites and maintaining said posting.
• Monitoring nest sites weekly, at minimum, for evidence of disturbance or predation.
• Performing weekly bird surveys to collect demographic data according to specified protocol, and banded bird resightings as directed.
• Protecting sites from disturbance through predation management and game camera monitoring in cooperation with site managers and partner agencies, educating beachgoers about coastal bird species while encouraging compliance with posted areas, and engaging in outreach to user groups.

Compensation: $19.00 per hour

Essential Functions

• Collaborate with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist to ensure all survey, monitoring, and posting is completed at sites.
• Post nesting sites with symbolic fencing as required or immediately when new nest sites are located.
• Monitor weekly, at a minimum, for nesting progress, predation, and disturbance according to the terms of Audubon’s contractual requirements.
• Survey weekly, at minimum, to collect avian demographic data and enter data into the Florida Shorebird Database or other database as required.
• Assist with other shorebird conservation and survey efforts.
• Communicate management needs to supervisor with regard to disturbance minimization through predation management, data collection using game cameras or other technology, alteration of posted nest-site boundaries, removal of posting materials and field equipment in advance of severe storm warnings, management and reporting on bird mortalities, and implementation of disturbance minimization at nesting sites or migratory bird congregation sites.
• Contribute to report writing as needed and submitting content for program related publications in a variety of media.
• Contribute photographs and short stories about birds and bird stewardship for use on Audubon website and in social media.
• Responsible for periodic cleaning and maintenance of program vehicles, trailers, and UTVs as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife ecology or related field preferred.
• 1-2 years/seasons demonstrated expertise in bird identification and performing demographic bird surveys using rigorous protocols is required. At least two years/seasons of experience in shorebird or seabird identification and rigorous surveys is required. Snowy Plover experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience pulling trailers.
• Kayak paddling experience in nearshore marine or open-water conditions is required.
• Demonstrated success with accurate recording of field-collected data and data entry using MS Excel, MS Access, or online web portal data entry is required.
• Superior communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and with multiple stakeholder groups.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills, one who possesses a high degree of integrity.
• Demonstrated experience working with external partners and volunteers.
• Must have a valid driver's license and ability to pass background check to access Air force base facilities.
• Must be able to lift up to 35lbs, and be able to traverse long distances miles on beach carrying spotting scope, binoculars, and daypack without accommodation.
• Demonstrated experience with performing fieldwork in challenging coastal conditions especially in hot conditions.

This position is within the Marine/Estuarine Subsection (MESS) and Aquatic Habitat Restoration/Enhancement (AHRE) Subsection of the Aquatic Habitat Conservation and Restoration Section (AHCR). This position will serve as a project manager within the South and Southwest Florida AHCR multidisciplinary team for aquatic habitat restoration/enhancement of public waterbodies and wetlands to benefit fish and wildlife, including marine, estuarine, and freshwater resources along the Gulf of Mexico coast of Florida from the Manatee River to Cape Sable, and inland. The position holder will:

  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies and stakeholder groups to identify, develop, and implement wetland and aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement projects. Candidate will also be responsible for identifying and developing their own projects.

  • Pursue grant funding for identified restoration and enhancement projects and with internal and external organization partners. Manage awarded grants to implement habitat restoration and enhancement projects.

  • Implement restoration projects, including procuring permits, managing contracts, and overseeing construction.

(1) Non-native plant removal is the primary task, using mechanical (typically a machete) and chemical means (triclopyr ester & glyphosate application); includes maintenance of tools and facilities (50% of total work hours);

(2) Participation in 10 to 20 prescribed fires, including clean-up & maintenance of tools and staging of equipment after completion of a physical fitness test (walk 2 miles carrying a 25-pound weighted vest in under 30 minutes) (10 to 20%);

(3) Florida Department of Environmental Protection trainings, such as Basic Fire Management class (S130/S190/L180 in early March with an NWCG certified instructor), ATV / UTV training, chainsaw training; trailer training; on the job chemical mixing training and formal herbicide training, plant identification training (as needed), OJT 4x4 off road vehicle training, site orientation, basic FDEP employee trainings (5-10%);

Description of duties: An exciting opportunity exists for a Fish and Wildlife Technician to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section in managing Green Swamp, Lower Hillsborough, and Upper Hillsborough Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), and Little Gator Creek Wildlife and Environmental Area.  FWC’s Southwest Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities.  This position will assist with the application of wildlife habitat management activities including prescribed burning, mowing, chopping, clearing, planting, and chemical control of desirable and non-desirable vegetation.  The incumbent will also be required to operate, maintain, and repair equipment and vehicles including trucks, tractors, ATVs, and heavy equipment in accordance with manufacturer and industry recommendations.  Incumbent will assist biologists with wildlife management activities for game, non-game, imperiled and nuisance species to include surveys, nesting support, habitat analysis, check station management, site visits and accurate technical biological data collection.  Other duties include assistance in the planning, development and maintenance of projects facilitating public use including parking and road construction, culvert installation, trash pickup, building maintenance and fence, gate and sign construction and maintenance.  Incumbent will prepare and submit accurate weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for timesheets, purchasing, harvest and accomplishments.  Employee will be required to interact professionally with the public and partners providing accurate information concerning wildlife, area conditions, rules and regulations, and will attend regional and divisional meetings and training programs.

Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist II

Location: Quincy, Florida

Overview: In partnership with the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) the Farm Bill Wildlife Biologists will coordinate and implement wildlife habitat-related conservation programs and provide technical assistance within the NRCS and FWC Quail and Gopher Tortoise Initiative Focal Areas. The position will be headquartered in the Quincy USDA Service Center. This position will be an employee of and supervised by Pheasants Forever, Inc and Quail Forever(PFQF) and will work in joint capacity with partner agencies to promote, coordinate and implement conservation provisions of the Federal Farm Bill on private lands, with primary focus on the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) Working Lands for Wildlife (WLFW) Bobwhite Quail Pine Savanna Project. Conservation delivery may also involve other relevant Farm Bill programs such as the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), general EQIP, and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), as well as state and local habitat programs and initiatives.  General duties will include all aspects of wildlife habitat planning, contract coordination, conservation plan writing, site assessment/eligibility determination, program promotion/outreach, landowner technical assistance, reporting, and assisting with habitat and population monitoring. 

 

Specific Duties:

  • Provide technical assistance (wildlife habitat focus) and guidance to private landowners, government agencies, non-government organizations and other groups for USDA NRCS conservation programs.  Training provided jointly by NRCS, FWC, and QF.

  • Coordinate the implementation and application of wildlife habitat programs within Focal Areas in cooperation with partner agencies.

  • Complete conservation plans, job sheets, wildlife habitat evaluation guides (WHEG) and other required documentation for the conservation programs requiring biological expertise in cooperation with the listed partners.

  • Communicate program requirements, complete site visits to determine eligibility, and develop contract documents for applicants and participants of USDA-NRCS conservation programs and other local and state programs.

  • Review plans and specifications for feasibility for implementation under Farm Bill program contract rules, etc.

  • Assist in population monitoring and plant inventories.

  • Accelerate conservation program enrollment by conducting outreach such as workshops, field days, demonstration events, and habitat tours.

  • Provide on-site landowner technical assistance for conservation practice implementation.

  • Work with local QF chapters to assist with habitat program education and outreach and provide technical assistance for habitat projects.

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with landowners and partner agencies.

  • Ability to work independently and with diverse clientele. Must be a motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills.

  • Knowledge of wildlife ecology, forest and grassland management including the ability to utilize various habitat management tools in the development of management plans, particularly prescribed fire.

  • Quincy Location: Knowledge of, and/or practical experience with silviculture as it relates to timber management and production in the Southeastern US.

  • Knowledge of conservation and wildlife programs provided by federal (i.e., Farm Bill, US Fish and Wildlife Service), state, & local entities. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to manage demanding workloads.

  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, GPS, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) is required.

  • Valid driver’s license required; some use of personal vehicle required (mileage reimbursement provided).

  • Must be able to obtain USDA Federal Security Clearance.

 

Training and Experience Guideline: Any combination of training and/or experience that will enable the applicant to possess the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Management, Forestry, Grazing or closely related natural resources field is required. A Master’s Degree is preferred. Proven experience working with USDA Farm Bill programs is also preferred. The ideal candidate will exhibit a balance of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills required to implement voluntary conservation programs on private lands. A successful applicant must enjoy working with private landowners to achieve their objectives. Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in forestry, grazing, and wildlife is also ideal.
