Position Summary

 

The Senior Project Coordinator, Shorebird, will be responsible for coordinating rigorous shore/seabird nesting season surveys and rigorous nonbreeding season surveys of migratory and resident shore/seabirds for Audubon’s Southwest Florida Shorebird Program. Reporting to Audubon Florida’s Director of Bird Conservation, the Senior Project Coordinator will also be responsible for working closely with local partners to develop and oversee volunteer bird stewardship programs at sites within the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (RBNERR) and Clam Pass County Park in Collier County, and at the Little Estero Island Critical Wildlife Area (CWA) in Lee County. They will also be responsible for working with the Audubon Florida's Director of Bird Conservation and other partners to develop a nesting shore/seabird survey and stewardship program at Cayo Costa State Park on Cayo Costa and North Captiva islands in Lee County that may also include other barrier islands and regionally important sites in Southwest Florida.

 

The Senior Project Coordinator works on mainland beaches and travels by motorboat to work on remote, offshore islands alone or with other staff or volunteers. These sites include, but are not limited to: Keewaydin Island, Big Marco Pass CWA, Tigertail Beach, Cape Romano, and Second Chance CWA. They will be responsible for the ongoing, effective coordination with multiple external partners, including RBNERR research staff with whom this position will be closely allied as well as a broad variety of other state and local agency staff, regional organizations, and volunteers. This role will be in the office and in the field.

 

*From March through August (“breeding season”), Senior Project Coordinator will lead all monitoring and protection activities for the project. From August through March, the Senior Shorebird Project Coordinator will be responsible for: completing surveys and updating metrics into the database, reporting on and resighting leg bands, overseeing all seasonal staff, volunteer recruitment, management, and training; writing short articles with photos for publication in Audubon and RBNERR social/news media; and helping to conduct verbal and written outreach to key user groups impacting coastal birds in Collier and Lee counties.

 

This is a full-time, grant-funded position.

Compensation: $50,000 / year

 

Essential Functions

 

  • In coordination with local partners, ensure all sites are effectively surveyed during the state-prescribed beach-nesting bird survey windows and accurate data posted online in the Florida Shorebird Database by required deadlines.

  • In coordination with local partners, ensure sites are monitored at least weekly for nesting progress and disturbance, with attendant Florida Shorebird Database (FSD) data entry, and stewarded to the terms of Audubon’s contracts, to include posting and maintaining symbolic fencing and signage.

  • Hire, mentor, train, and direct 2-3 seasonal staff and volunteers on disturbance monitoring, surveying, and stewardship activities. Ensure nonbreeding bird surveys and data entry are captured in Audubon’s Access database in a timely manner.

  • Educate and engage the public around coastal bird conservation through outreach at beach sites, verbal presentations to key constituencies, and via short articles/stories with photos for Audubon and RBNERR news media.

  • Integrate the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, and justice into outreach, community engagement, and stewardship recruitment efforts.

  • Contribute to technical and grant report writing.

  • Oversee the deployment and maintenance needs of assigned program vehicles, trailers, boats and UTVs.

  • Coordinate with RBNERR managers at staff meetings and leading and organizing agendas with Audubon partners at semiannual meetings of the Collier and Lee Shorebird Partnerships as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife ecology or related field required.

  • Minimum 3 years of demonstrated relevant work, volunteer, or educational experience including, shorebird and seabird identification, performing wildlife surveys, leading, or managing volunteers, and experience coordinating and collaborating with external professional partners.

  • Demonstrated experience working with external partner agencies and organizations and leading volunteers, programs, and projects is required.

  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills that can be adapted to reach a wide range of individuals and used to build consensus.

Position Summary

From April through September, the Three Rooker Island Shorebird Monitoring and Stewardship Coordinator is responsible for assisting Florida Park Service staff with beach-nesting bird monitoring and stewardship work at primarily off-shore sites in Pinellas County, Florida. Nesting species surveyed include but are not limited to Black Skimmers, Royal Terns, Laughing Gull, Snowy Plovers, and American Oystercatchers. Stewardship activities will be conducted on Three Rooker Islands, located within Anclote Key Preserve State Park. Surveys and monitoring will be conducted on all islands within Anclote Key Preserve State Park (Three Rooker Island, Anclote Key, and Anclote Bar), Honeymoon Island State Park, and Caladesi Island State Park. At these sites, the coordinator is responsible for assisting Park staff with:

 

  • Posting and maintaining symbolic fencing and signage around beach-nesting bird sites

  • Monitoring and surveying nest sites weekly for evidence of disturbance or predation

  • Performing nesting bird surveys weekly, including during five formal, one-week windows (including color band resighting)

  • Non-breeding shorebird surveys and band resightings, especially focused on state and federally listed species;
    Data entry, recordkeeping, and reporting as directed by supervisor and by Park staff

  • Helping protect sites from disturbance through stewardship activities requiring motorboat transportation to and from Three Rooker Islands; recruiting, organizing, and working closely with volunteers to chaperone beach-nesting bird colonies during weekends and major holidays; educating beachgoers about these species; encouraging compliance with posted areas; and engaging in outreach to user groups as directed by supervisor.


This is a full-time seasonal position with a start date of April 17, 2023 and ending in September of 2023, determined in consultation with supervisor and Park staff. This seasonal position is funded through Fall 2023 with future funding possible. The Stewardship Coordinator will be based out of their home in the Tampa Bay area. This is an exciting seasonal position for a professional biologist with experience of shorebird/seabird surveys and experience of operating small vessels in nearshore marine waters subject to tides, strong currents, and inclement weather. Wet landings are required to disembark passengers at several islands.

 

Compensation: $19.00 / hour

Essential Functions

With direction from the Shorebird Project Manager and designated Florida Park staff, the Coordinator will ensure:

  • All sites are posted with symbolic fencing and signage by posting deadlines

  • All sites are surveyed weekly, including during the monthly Florida Shorebird Alliance beach-nesting bird survey windows

  • All sites are monitored weekly for signs of disturbance and changes in nesting status

  • All sites are stewarded to the terms of Audubon’s contract

  • Survey data and band resights are entered into the Florida Shorebird Database and Access or Excel databases as directed by the supervisor or Park staff within one week following the survey date

  • Summaries of survey and stewardship data required for grant report submissions

  • Contribution of photographs and short stories about birds and bird stewardship for use on Audubon website and in social media

  • Periodic cleaning and maintenance of program vehicles, trailers, and boats as needed

  • Training, mentorship, and management of volunteers engaged in monitoring and stewardship activities

  • Engagement of the public around coastal bird conservation through outreach at beach sites and through presentations to user groups.

This position is required to work independently and in partnership with designated Florida Park Service staff or with another full-time staff, as part of a team of bird stewards on weekends and holidays, and will be responsible for solo operation of boats to access offshore barrier island sites for survey work, posting, and stewardship.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife ecology or related field required.

  • 1-2 years' demonstrated experience performing bird surveys required; experience in shorebird and seabird identification and performing waterbird surveys strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in solo operation of a motorboat in nearshore marine waters with wet landings is required; operating and maintaining equipment including boats, trucks, and trailers a must.

Position Summary

Audubon Florida seeks a Seasonal Rooftop Seabird Field Technician to support nesting season seabird conservation on rooftops throughout the Florida Panhandle. Rooftop nesting seabirds are primarily Least Terns but also including Black Skimmers, and Gull-billed Terns. The Rooftop Seabird Field Technician will work in a five county region of Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay.

 

The Field Technician will help with rooftop colony conservation including fencing rooftops, finding and monitoring roof colonies, conducting emergency chick retrieval and assisting with volunteer coordination. This is a seasonal position, scheduled for 40 hours a week (including some holidays and weekends), April - August 2023 and will be based in the Panama City/Destin, Florida area.

Essential Functions

Under the guidance of the Panhandle Program Manager, Field Technician will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Survey the Panhandle’s historic rooftop nesting sites to determine whether they are active during the nesting season

  • Engage with and support the owners of buildings with rooftop colonies

  • Work with property managers to “chick proof” rooftops prior to the nesting season

  • Organize volunteers to check the building sites of rooftop colonies to collect fallen chicks and return them to rooftops

Position Summary

Audubon Florida supports management of beach-nesting birds at many locations on the Gulf Coast and Northeast Atlantic Coast of Florida by surveying, posting, stewarding and protecting nesting areas from disturbance. To better monitor and protect the nesting shorebirds along beaches and other nest sites Audubon is hiring a seasonal Beach Anchor Steward to work at beach-nesting bird sites within Collier County, Florida. The site most likely requiring stewardship is Big Marco Pass Critical Wildlife Area. Nesting species may include Wilson’s Plover, Least Tern, and Black Skimmer. The primary responsibility of the Anchor Steward is to organize and train volunteers to help monitor nesting birds and to conduct public outreach around the sea/shorebird nesting areas. Additional responsibilities include aiding with additional sea/shorebird surveys with the supervisor, assisting external partners with research and management, and data management at the discretion of the supervisor.

 

This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, seasonal position focused on weekend days and holidays, including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, if nesting persists until the latter holiday. The position is expected to begin on April 17, 2023 and continue through the end of nesting season, to be determined in consultation with supervisor. Nesting may persist into August or early September but can end early in the event of a catastrophic event or other total loss of nesting activity.

Essential Functions

Under the direction of Audubon’s Southwest Florida Monitoring and Stewardship Project Manager, the Collier County Anchor Steward will be responsible for the following tasks:

• Monitor nesting birds and conduct minimum weekly counts of nests, chicks, and fledged young of each nesting species, and enter/report data to the supervisor.
• Assist site managers and Audubon staff with installing symbolic fencing around new nest areas as needed.
• Conduct public outreach at nesting beaches on weekends and holidays generally between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hours may run longer or change as needed, and longer hours are anticipated on holiday weekends.

DUTIES:

Responsible for organizing and conducting direct control operations to reduce wildlife damage within a geographical area or technical/subject area of program involvement.

 

Primary species of concern will be feral swine, conducting damage management through trapping and night operations.

 

Inspects and surveys areas and, as necessary, will revise existing WDM programs in close consultation with higher-level management.

 

Uses WDM tools/devices which may include some or all of the following depending on need in assigned area: firearms; foothold, body-grip, cage traps; foot snares; neck snares; chemical control methods; pyrotechnics; noise cannons/exploders; drop nets; rocket/cannon nets; various other scaring devices.

 

Assists Wildlife Biologists by correctly identifying current, and forecasting future damage, problems and relating them to the damage-causing species.

 

Independently determines and selects the most effective means of control for individual situations.

 

Modifies or adapts established damage control techniques as necessary to meet local conditions and address specific environmental, economic or political considerations.

Position Summary

Audubon Florida seeks a Shorebird Biologist to support beach-nesting season bird conservation work in the Florida Panhandle. The Shorebird Biologist will work remotely in the Panama City region of Bay and Gulf counties and travel to complete the majority of work on and around beaches and islands including Tyndall Critical Wildlife Area, islands and beaches and adjacent to or within Tyndall Air Force Base and Eglin Cape San Blas.

This is a full-time seasonal position working 40 hours a week between February and August 2023 including some weekend days and holidays, such as Memorial Day and Independence Day. The Shorebird Biologist will be responsible for performing beach-nesting bird monitoring and protection work primarily in Bay and Gulf counties, Florida. Responsibilities include the following, in addition to other as-needed duties:


• Breeding surveys and nest searching for imperiled bird species including Snowy Plovers, Wilson’s Plovers, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers.
• Nonbreeding surveys for Piping Plovers, Red Knots, and other coastal bird species.
• Posting symbolic fencing around beach-nesting bird sites and maintaining said posting.
• Monitoring nest sites weekly, at minimum, for evidence of disturbance or predation.
• Performing weekly bird surveys to collect demographic data according to specified protocol, and banded bird resightings as directed.
• Protecting sites from disturbance through predation management and game camera monitoring in cooperation with site managers and partner agencies, educating beachgoers about coastal bird species while encouraging compliance with posted areas, and engaging in outreach to user groups.

Essential Functions

• Collaborate with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologist to ensure all survey, monitoring, and posting is completed at sites.
• Post nesting sites with symbolic fencing as required or immediately when new nest sites are located.
• Monitor weekly, at a minimum, for nesting progress, predation, and disturbance according to the terms of Audubon’s contractual requirements.
• Survey weekly, at minimum, to collect avian demographic data and enter data into the Florida Shorebird Database or other database as required.

Description of Duties:

This position is within the Marine/Estuarine Subsection (MESS) and Aquatic Habitat Restoration/Enhancement (AHRE) Subsection of the Aquatic Habitat Conservation and Restoration Section (AHCR). This position will serve as a project manager within the South and Southwest Florida AHCR multidisciplinary team for aquatic habitat restoration/enhancement of public waterbodies and wetlands to benefit fish and wildlife, including marine, estuarine, and freshwater resources along the Gulf of Mexico coast of Florida from the Manatee River to Cape Sable, and inland. The position holder will:

  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies and stakeholder groups to identify, develop, and implement wetland and aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement projects. Candidate will also be responsible for identifying and developing their own projects.

  • Pursue grant funding for identified restoration and enhancement projects and with internal and external organization partners. Manage awarded grants to implement habitat restoration and enhancement projects.

  • Implement restoration projects, including procuring permits, managing contracts, and overseeing construction.

  • Work across FWC divisions and cooperate with other federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and others as appropriate to implement FWC’s aquatic habitat conservation and restoration program, including participating in and providing input to internal (FWC sponsored) and external (non-FWC sponsored) groups to address issues such as non-native species, resource conservation, environmental resource permitting, public outreach and imperiled species as they relate to aquatic habitat.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of wetland and aquatic habitat monitoring and sampling to evaluate and predict environmental response to project activities in coordination with other FWC personnel and external partners.

  • Create and maintain databases of collected scientific data and maps of project areas using appropriate computer software, including GPS hardware and GIS programs.

  • Prepare, publish and present project management plans and relevant project findings through internal (reports and management plans) and external (peer-reviewed publications, professional and public meeting, etc.) outlets related to estuarine and marine habitat conservation activities including, but not limited to, restoration projects, resource monitoring and biological resource surveys.

  • Provide oral presentations regarding FWC’s aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement efforts in the region.

  • Manage regional budgets and supervise OPS grant funded field staff.

  • Work independently with limited supervision.

  • Responsible for timely and accurate processing and or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered. Responsible for adhering to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, F.S., related to State Comptroller’s rules and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission invoice processing and warrant distribution procedures. Meet assigned deadlines and budget requirements.

  • Perform other project-related duties and tasks as directed by supervisor. Maintain all assigned vehicles, boats, and field and laboratory equipment in working condition. Assist with other AHCR and Commission projects as necessary. Assist with prescribed fire application to wetlands for habitat management (prescribed fire experience is preferred).

  • Acquire and maintain FWC Scientific SCUBA certification.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required for the Position:

 Qualified applicants will have a strong background in aquatic resource management and aquatic habitat enhancement methods. Knowledge of terminology, principles, and techniques used in biological research, analysis, or testing; knowledge of data collection methods; ability to collect, record, and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences; ability to conduct aquatic (freshwater and/or marine) habitat restoration projects, biological studies or analyses using valid scientific methods and techniques; ability to perform quantitative analyses of scientific data; ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to write technical reports and pursue grant funding for restoration projects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff, the public and other stakeholders; ability to work independently with limited supervision; knowledge of freshwater, marine and/or estuarine ecosystems; ability to travel occasionally and conduct in-water surveys of estuarine and marine natural resources; proficiency with small boat and trailer handling and use of environmental sampling gear; ability to spend long hours in or on the water in various weather conditions; ability to perform rigorous activities in aquatic environments; ability to effectively swim and be comfortable in the water;  ability to supervise subordinates effectively; and, knowledge of personal computers and related software.
