Position description and duties: 

Description: 

The Land Conservation and Planning (LCP) group is offering an exciting opportunity to work across sections of the agency and with various state agencies and public land managers on gopher tortoise, associated habitat, and commensal species conservation, whether it be finding potential gopher tortoise recipient sites, assisting with management plans, providing related outreach, or assisting with habitat conservation efforts and acquisition project proposals. The position advertised is for a Biological Scientist IV in the Wildlife and Habitat Management section of the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation of FWC.   

Duties:

• Coordinate with other agencies on management plans, feasibility assessments, and potential gopher tortoise recipient site evaluations. The position will be the primary liaison with other public land managers to help screen for gopher tortoise recipient site potential.

• Coordinate with the Wildlife Diversity Conservation (WDC) section to provide analysis and necessary language for FWC management plans for potential gopher tortoise habitat. Participate in WDC trainings, meetings, site visits, and Standard Operating Procedure reviews for gopher tortoise recipient sites.

• Assist with review of potential gopher tortoise recipient sites and title work documents. 

• Identify grant opportunities for gopher tortoise habitat acquisitions and coordinate with WDC for application. Identify and conduct outreach to private landowners for potential recipient sites, including those within FWC Additions and Inholdings Acquisition List (Wildlife Management Area optimal boundaries).

• General coordination with WDC regarding acquisition opportunities and funds that may be beneficial to gopher tortoises, associated habitat, and commensal species. 

• Coordinate with WDC to maintain conservation easement GIS geodatabase to track the total number of conservation easements and total acreage protected.

• Coordinate/develop/review/analyze/map potential projects utilizing GIS.

• Assist on other acquisition and management plan tasks related to gopher tortoises, associated habitat, and commensal species.

• Perform other duties, tasks, and projects as needed and assigned by supervisor.

• Attend relevant training programs as required or recommended by supervisor.

Description: 

The Land Conservation and Planning (LCP) subsection is offering an exciting opportunity in land conservation, working closely with land managers across the state to conserve priority land acquisitions, expanding the Florida Wildlife Corridor, and adding to more than six million acres within our Wildlife Management Area system. The position advertised is for a Land Acquisition Review Agent in the Wildlife and Habitat Management section of the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation of FWC.   

Duties:

Coordinates intra-agency, inter-agency, and stakeholder interaction and communication on projects, proposals (acquisitions and grants), plans, and issues related to land acquisition, expanding collaboration and partnerships for project success.

Participates in the management of the Commission’s Florida Forever land acquisition program and land management planning programs. Helps in the maintenance, coordination, and development of land conservation and acquisition programs and associated projects on a statewide basis. Provides information and presentations to the Acquisition and Restoration Council (ARC) and an advisory council to the Board of Trustees (Governor and Cabinet) on state land acquisition and management issues.

Contributes to a collaborative and consensus building decision making process on land conservation projects, conservation proposals and similar initiatives.

Participates as a member of a team of land acquisition and land management planning professionals in all elements of conservation acquisition and planning programs through project design, implementation, and completion.

Description of Duties:

This position is within the Aquatic Habitat Conservation and Restoration Section (AHCR). The position will work within the Southwest Florida AHCR multidisciplinary team to develop freshwater, marine, and estuarine wetland and aquatic habitat restoration and enhancement projects to benefit fish and wildlife resources.

Identify, develop, coordinate, and implement wetland and aquatic habitat restoration projects that maximize benefits to fish and wildlife resources, including removal of nuisance vegetation and organic sediments, herbicide treatment of aquatic plants, planting of beneficial wetland vegetation species, prescribed burning and utilization of other wetland restoration techniques.

Procure necessary state and federal permits required for project implementation. Develop project bid documents and contracts.  Provide contract management and contractor oversight of approved aquatic habitat enhancement projects.

Work across FWC divisions and cooperate with other federal and state agencies, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and others as appropriate to implement FWC’s aquatic habitat restoration program, including participating in and providing input to internal (FWC sponsored) and external (non-FWC sponsored) aquatic resource management groups.

Coordinate and assist in wetland and aquatic habitat monitoring and sampling to evaluate and predict environmental response to project activities in coordination with other FWC division, office and section personnel.

Create and maintain databases of collected scientific data and maps of project areas using appropriate computer software.

Prepare, publish and present project management plans and relevant project findings through internal (quarterly/annual/completion reports and management plans) and external (peer-reviewed publications, professional and public meeting, etc.) outlets.

Perform other project-related duties and tasks as directed by supervisor.  Maintain project vehicles, boats, and field and laboratory equipment in working condition.  Assist other AHRE and Commission projects as necessary.

Responsible for timely and accurate processing and or approval, as appropriate, of vendor invoices and warrants for payment of goods received or services rendered to avoid automatic interest penalty payments to said vendors.
