Summary:

The Disney Wilderness Preserve Manager provides management oversight of DWP. They supervise the outreach & education, stewardship, and facility leads at the preserve. The DWP Manager ensures that facilities maintenance needs are addressed and coordinates daily facility operations with the preserve staff. They also work to ensure programs are supported and aligned with achieving CCI’s mission by working in matrix teams with other Preserve Managers and staff across CCI. In addition, the Preserve Manager works with the CCI Training & Education Coordinator and outreach staff to develop and implement education and training courses and materials. This position works to ensure onsite visitors and neighboring communities understand the ecological and economic importance of protected areas and natural systems and The Nature Conservancy’s role in their conservation through outreach programming, as well as the importance of protecting and conserving flora, fauna, and the benefits to people.  In addition, they work with the Stewardship initiative lead and the DWP Conservation Coordinator/Manager to support the implementation of stewardship projects on the preserve. They identify and successfully obtain grant funding to support CCI programs and provide philanthropy, and government relations (GR) support as needed. Description of duties:

The FWC’s Wildlife and Habitat Management Section is seeking a highly motivated lead area biologist to work with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Florida Forest Service (FFS), NGOs, and other stakeholders to manage natural communities and wildlife resources in the northwest region at Tate’s Hell, Apalachicola, and Wakulla Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The incumbent, under the direct supervision of the District Wildlife Biologist, coordinates and consults with FFS and USFS regarding resource and wildlife management practices including natural community restoration, imperiled species management, timber harvesting, public access, prescribed burning, and wildlife habitat enhancement.

Leads adaptive efforts to restore red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) habitat, establish new recruitment clusters, and monitor the RCW population and recruitment success at Tate’s Hell WMA (e.g. tree inventory, fledgling checks, artificial cavity installation).

Assists with the application of habitat management activities including prescribed burning, timber thinning, longleaf pine restoration, mechanical and chemical control of native and exotic vegetation, and supplemental planting for wildlife. Conducts monitoring and data collection/analysis for locally important and imperiled wildlife species using scientifically accepted protocols. Conducts population surveys including Northern bobwhite covey call counts and deer spotlight/distance sampling. Works with the Agency’s Bear Management Program and local officials to assist with nuisance bear/wildlife issues. Conducts vegetation surveys as needed and monitors vegetation response to habitat manipulations. Assists land management partners with planning and development of projects to facilitate public use including public hunts and recreational use programs (e.g. collection of biological data from harvested animals, data analysis/reporting, permitting, rule change proposals, commenting, and review, public user engagement).

Performs administrative duties including supervision of employees in accordance with Agency policies and procedures, contract and budget management, project reporting, equipment maintenance, and assists lead agencies with maintenance of public use infrastructure (e.g. roads, parking areas, kiosks, picnic facilities, trails, boat ramps, water control structures, fences, gates). Collaborates with staff at other conservation areas, provides technical assistance to individuals, organizations, and other government agencies, and participates in team meetings, seminars, and workshops related to wildlife resource management.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge and experience in conducting wildlife surveys including game and nongame species, analyzing data, and summarizing results. Experience with the use of ArcGIS and GPS and its application. Possess proficient writing skills. Ability to operate and maintain 4WD vehicles and ATVs. Ability to work independently and in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to work efficiently in a team of diverse people with differing backgrounds. Experience with supervision of others on the job. Ability to plan and prioritize work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers. Skill in use of Microsoft Office software (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Strong land management skills are required to evaluate habitat conditions and to plan, prescribe and complete appropriate habitat treatments. Applicant must have applied knowledge of wildlife populations and habitat management techniques in Florida. GIS and other technological skills are also requisite for this level of land management. Job requirements therefore consist of the KSAs described above, or a solid foundation of habitat management in Florida, coupled with the motivation, initiative, and proclivity to develop and apply the KSAs listed above.

Description of duties: The FWC’s South Region is seeking a highly motivated biologist to lead a team of Wildlife and Habitat Management Section staff on the Okaloacoochee (OK) Slough Wildlife Management Area (WMA) located in Hendry County, Florida. Primary responsibilities include planning, development, and implementation of hydrologic, habitat, and wildlife management programs for this 58,880-acre WMA. This includes the application of prescribed fire, conducting and providing oversight for invasive vegetation control, assisting in the development and promotion of public use programs including both hunting and non-hunting uses, and helping to set management and restoration objectives consistent with agency and division directives. Additionally, this position will conduct wildlife and vegetation surveys, coordinate and implement managed public hunts on the WMA, as well as the Stormwater Treatment Area(s) as needed, collect biological data from hunter-harvested animals, prepare and submit administrative and biological reports, maintain equipment in a safe and useable condition, and further agency goals through interactions with cooperating agencies and stakeholders. This position also must successfully coordinate with the Florida Forest Service on management issues related to the neighboring OK Slough State Forest. This Lead Area Biologist position will work as a team with other WMAs within the District or South Region to accomplish management actions such as prescribed burning. The successful candidate will supervise three full-time staff of one Biological Scientist II and two Fish & Wildlife Technicians, and will supervise seasonal hunter check station operators as necessary. The incumbent will regularly work independently in the field. The incumbent will attend regional and divisional meetings as well as various training courses as necessary. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of Florida ecosystems and natural processes, wildlife ecology, ecosystem management, water management, fire ecology and plant succession. Applied knowledge of the principles and practices of habitat management and restoration, including prescribed fire, mechanical and chemical vegetation control, and exotic plant control. Wildlife habitat survey and inventory knowledge; ability to collect and analyze biological data. Ability to track spending and monitor budgets. Ability to create scientific reports free of grammatical and typographical errors. Ability to interact with stakeholders, co-workers, and cooperating agencies in a professional manner. The position will begin 04/10/2024 and continue through the end of nesting season. This experienced scientist position participates in programs administered by the Land Stewardship Section and performs a variety of duties to assure District-owned lands are properly managed for recreational and ecological purposes.  This position conducts a wide range of technical and complex land management activities requiring a working knowledge of various ecological principles as well as expertise acquired through a combination of past work experience and formal educational training.  Duties include prescribed burning, exotic plant control, mechanical vegetation control, public use/recreation management, vegetation and wildlife monitoring, and developing and implementing hydrologic and vegetative restoration projects.  Incumbent prioritizes work flow for mitigation properties in the Upper Lakes Region and utilizes GIS to track resource management projects and successes.  Incumbent develops budgets and tracks expenditures and assists with the development of management plans and annual reports.  Incumbent writes, initiates, and implements statements of work for contracted land management activities and management agreements and supervises contractors.  The position is also responsible for assisting and advising the regulatory staff in the Orlando Service Center regarding mitigation and resource management needs.  The incumbent will coordinate with the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority and the DEP on the development and presentation of mitigation plans as needed.

Incumbent shall possess strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work productively in a group setting with co-workers and outside agencies.  Assignments for developmental purposes may include some work that is typical of a higher level scientist position.

Education/Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor’s Degree in biology, ecology, wildlife, or a related natural science discipline is preferred and 4+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the field of natural resource management.

Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Licenses:
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days State of Florida prescribed burners certification.

Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
The work environment is a combination of office and field work, with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators.  May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.

Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies.  This position is a member of the Emergency Debris Operations Team.
