Description of duties:

An exciting opportunity exists for an entry-level Fish and Wildlife Biologist to join a team of employees within the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section of FWC. FWC’s Southwest Region is seeking a motivated applicant that is willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of conditions throughout the year in fulfillment of their job responsibilities. Primary responsibilities will include assisting with the planning, development and implementation of habitat management programs to maintain and perpetuate native wildlife populations on the Lake Wales Ridge Wildlife and Environmental Area. 

This position is also responsible for the accomplishment of Commission-planned activities such as the following: prescribed fire, mechanical and chemical control of native and invasive non-native vegetation, design and implementation of biological surveys to monitor the status of selected species, including data analysis and report writing; development and implementation of public recreational programs; proposing regulations based on sound biological and sociological principles;  planning, development, and maintenance of projects to facilitate public use including road construction, establishment of parking areas, culvert installation, and construction and maintenance of boundary and interior fences and gates;  supervising various OPS staff; and furthering agency goals through interactions with cooperating agencies and stakeholders.        

Job duties will further include providing assistance with the development and periodic revision of long-range, comprehensive management plans, and will also include providing input and review for the preparation of programs, annual work plans, budget proposals, area regulations, brochures and reports.

Description of duties: The Gopher Tortoise Assistant Biologist has the opportunity to work on a dynamic team and positively affect gopher tortoise conservation throughout Florida. This is a critical role in the Wildlife Diversity Conservation Section to educate the public and conserve Florida’s only native tortoise species. This is an office-based position eligible for part-time telework and will have occasional opportunities for field work.

The individual in this position will affect gopher tortoise conservation throughout Florida through providing information and raising awareness of protections and conservation efforts.  The main function of this role is to provide the citizens of Florida with information and subject matter expertise in a timely and professional manner. The incumbent is expected to communicate about gopher tortoise laws and regulations, conservation actions, minimizing impacts, and permits. The incumbent will communicate with the public via phone, email, and occasionally in-person. The incumbent will also have the ability to engage in field work conducting site visits to areas under consideration for permitting to verify gopher tortoise surveys/population estimates, and to ensure compliance with state rules and guidelines. Duties include providing technical assistance to the public when needed for permit applications, responding to public requests for information regarding gopher tortoises, reviewing and issuing permits to address safety issues concerning burrows or existing structures, and reporting potential violations to FWC law enforcement. In addition, the incumbent is expected to work collaboratively with a team of biologists and office personnel to support the agency’s conservation mission. It is also expected that the incumbent will participate in local outreach programs, educate adults and children about gopher tortoises and wildlife conservation, and manage the distribution of educational materials. This position serves on a highly productive team of land managers to restore and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of wildlife species and for the enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors. The successful candidate will be a key team member responsible for all aspects of management of the WMAs including application of ~12,000 acres of prescribed fire annually and conducting mechanical and chemical vegetation control (mowing, roller chopping, herbicide, etc.) to manage habitats. Habitat improvement is focused on imperiled and locally important species including, but not limited to, red-cockaded woodpecker, striped newt, northern bobwhite, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey. The successful candidate will assist with the operation of hunter check stations on the two WMAs to collect biological data of hunter harvested game.

Additionally, the position will assist with a variety of wildlife surveys for both game and non-game species including red-cockaded woodpeckers, northern bobwhite, white-tailed deer, and Bachman sparrows.  This position assists the Lead Area Biologist in all aspects of running the WMAs including purchasing, annual reports, data entry, GIS, and harvest reports. The incumbent will interact with various partner agencies and the public to provide information concerning wildlife and area management, rules and regulations. Occasionally the incumbent will be required to attend regional and divisional meetings as well as various trainings as needed.

The FWC’s Wildlife and Habitat Management Section is seeking a highly motivated lead area biologist to work with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), Florida Forest Service (FFS), NGOs, and other stakeholders to manage natural communities and wildlife resources in the northwest region at Tate’s Hell, Apalachicola, and Wakulla Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). The incumbent, under the direct supervision of the District Wildlife Biologist, coordinates and consults with FFS and USFS regarding resource and wildlife management practices including natural community restoration, imperiled species management, timber harvesting, public access, prescribed burning, and wildlife habitat enhancement.

Leads adaptive efforts to restore red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) habitat, establish new recruitment clusters, and monitor the RCW population and recruitment success at Tate’s Hell WMA (e.g. tree inventory, fledgling checks, artificial cavity installation).

Assists with the application of habitat management activities including prescribed burning, timber thinning, longleaf pine restoration, mechanical and chemical control of native and exotic vegetation, and supplemental planting for wildlife. Conducts monitoring and data collection/analysis for locally important and imperiled wildlife species using scientifically accepted protocols. Conducts population surveys including Northern bobwhite covey call counts and deer spotlight/distance sampling. Primary responsibilities include planning, development, and implementation of hydrologic, habitat, and wildlife management programs for this 58,880-acre WMA. This includes the application of prescribed fire, conducting and providing oversight for invasive vegetation control, assisting in the development and promotion of public use programs including both hunting and non-hunting uses, and helping to set management and restoration objectives consistent with agency and division directives. Additionally, this position will conduct wildlife and vegetation surveys, coordinate and implement managed public hunts on the WMA, as well as the Stormwater Treatment Area(s) as needed, collect biological data from hunter-harvested animals, prepare and submit administrative and biological reports, maintain equipment in a safe and useable condition, and further agency goals through interactions with cooperating agencies and stakeholders. Position Summary

Audubon Florida supports management of beach-nesting birds at many locations in St. Johns County by surveying, posting, stewarding, and protecting nesting areas from disturbance. To better protect nesting shorebirds Audubon is hiring a seasonal Shorebird Steward to work within St. Johns County. The primary responsibilities of the Shorebird Steward are to steward shorebird colonies at Anastasia State Park, Fort Matanzas National Monument, Julia’s Island, and other sites as needed and to organize volunteers to help with this work. Stewarding involves a variety of actions including the observation of birds and the public at nesting sites and education of the public when their actions may pose a threat to the birds.

 

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week seasonal position focused on weekends and holidays, including Memorial Day and Independence Day. The position will begin 04/10/2024 and continue through the end of nesting season. Nesting season often persists through the middle of August but may end early based on conditions at the nesting sites (e.g., storms causing loss of beach habitat).

Under the direction of Audubon’s Northeast Florida Policy Associate, the St. Johns County Shorebird Steward will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assist with the installation of symbolic fencing around new nest areas as needed.

  • Steward at nesting sites prioritizing weekends and holidays. Hours are generally between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. though they may vary depending on needs.

  • Assist with recruiting, training, and scheduling of shorebird steward volunteers.

  • Work closely with local land managers, external partners, and volunteers in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with the public at beach nesting sites.

  • Ability to help recruit, train, support, and schedule volunteers.

  • Capable of walking and working on sandy beaches carrying field equipment during Florida summer field conditions, with or without accommodation.

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs., with or without accommodation.

  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to complete assigned tasks.

  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings.

  • Work well independently and with other staff and volunteers.

  • Must have a positive and diplomatic attitude.

  • Familiarity with local beaches is preferred.

  • Previous experience with shorebird stewardship preferred, but similar experience will be considered.

  • Interest in conservation and passion for the mission of the National Audubon Society a must.
