Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This position synthesizes technical fisheries assessment information in support of the agency’s marine fisheries rule making process, reviews and interprets stock assessments and fisheries regulations, evaluates life history and fisheries-dependent and independent data, and develops reports and presentations on marine fishery issues.

Assists Section Leaders by serving as a subject matter expert about federal fishery management actions, state management of marine fisheries, and Endangered Species Act and state listing proposals affecting fisheries in the Florida Keys.

  • Represents the Division of Marine Fisheries Management at regional events and meetings relating to marine fisheries management.

  • Develops productive working relationships with local fisheries management stakeholders, including recreational and commercial fishermen.  Identifies and characterizes local marine fisheries management issues. 

  • Reviews and interprets fisheries dependent and independent data and other available scientific information to characterize the status of regional marine fisheries.

  • Develops technical papers and presentations on management of various fisheries affecting Florida to guide and support the Commission's rulemaking process.  Participates in the rulemaking process to help the Commission build a record in support of their decisions.  Drafts supporting documents in coordination with FWC scientists, law enforcement, and legal staff.

  • Reviews and critiques fisheries stock assessments and regulations of other agencies, including federal regulations, affecting local fisheries.  Helps develop advice to Commission on appropriate responses.

  • Coordinates research projects that are relevant to state and federal fisheries management decisions.

  • Develop productive relationships with stakeholders such as other state and federal agencies, universities, private marine-related institutions, and other groups or organizations with an interest in marine fisheries resources.

  • Conducts public workshops, Advisory Board/Workgroup meetings, and other information-gathering meetings on issues relating to Florida's marine fisheries.

  • Responds to public inquiries regarding marine fisheries issues, including but not limited to life history, license requirements, rules, and regulations in a timely manner.

  • Provides support to Section leaders, Deputy Director, and Division Director on special assignments as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 Description of Duties: This primarily office-based position is part of the Environmental Commenting Program and assists with developing conservation measures to reduce potential adverse impacts to species with a focus on Florida manatee and marine turtle conservation through the review of permit applications. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Review permit applications and develop biological opinions to minimize or avoid impacts to protected species for environmental resource permits and other regulatory or planning authorizations such as Environmental Resource Permitting (ERP), Coastal Construction Control Line permits (CCCL), Sovereign Submerged Lands Leases (SSL), Joint Coastal Permits (JCP), various management plans, comprehensive plan amendments and State Clearinghouse under Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP);

  • Provide technical assistance to other sections within the agency, as well as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Army Corps of Engineers, Port Authorities, and county/city governments;

  • Implement county manatee protection plans (MPPs) and conduct MPP consistency determinations;

Are you passionate about entomology, public health, and hands-on laboratory work? We’re seeking a dedicated Insectary Technician to join our team and support the maintenance and development of mosquito colonies used in critical testing, evaluation, and public education. In this role, you’ll help sustain Field Validation mosquito colonies, establish new strains as needed for research, produce larvae for Public Information & Education programs, and assist the Applied Science & Technology Field Validation staff in operational research on mosquito control methods and products. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to innovative mosquito control efforts that protect public health and advance scientific understanding.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the AST Research Director in the performance of her/his duties

  • Maintains colonies of a variety of mosquito species for use in bioassays of new products, formulations, and PI&E for classroom teaching exercises

  • Produces colony larval or adult mosquitoes for field validations as needed

  • Maintain field collected larvae, to allow proper development in preparation for larval and adult bioassays following established protocols

  • Communicates with Aerial inspectors and Mosquito Control Biologist II on a regular basis regarding 1st or 2nd instar mosquito larvae breeding sites

  • Collects 2nd instar mosquito larvae from the field and transfers them to the larval insectary 

  • Participates in leading tours of the insectary and outreach events relevant to insectary operations 

  • Maintains mosquito fish, including cleaning tanks, feeding fish, and restocking the population as needed

  • Records data in laboratory notebooks and enters data into project databases

  • Performs a variety of maintenance duties as needed to keep insectary operational

  • Purchases supplies and maintain vendor records pertaining to insectary operations

Position Description:

The Land Conservation and Planning (LCP) program of the Wildlife and Habitat Management Section is responsible for the implementation and administration of the FWC’s land acquisition and management planning efforts. The program supports the protection and restoration of Florida’s wildlife habitats and natural resources through comprehensive planning, public engagement, and inter-agency coordination.

This position serves as a Land Conservation Planner (Planner IV) and will play a key role in managing land conservation planning projects, facilitating public meetings, conducting GIS analysis, coordinating with the Acquisition and Restoration Council (ARC) and other state and regional partners.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate the development and updates of management plans for Wildlife Management Areas and Wildlife Environmental Areas, in collaboration with municipalities, stakeholders, FWC staff, and partner agencies such as the Florida Forest Service, Water Management Districts, and the Department of Environmental Protection.

  • Assist in maintaining and updating GIS data layers related to FWC-managed lands, Florida Forever conservation projects, and potential acquisition areas.

  • Plan and facilitate public stakeholder meetings and hearings required for the development of management plans, including logistical coordination, communication with internal and external partners, and preparation of meeting materials.

  • Represent FWC at ARC meetings, presenting management plans and engaging in inter-agency coordination.

The incumbent will be responsible for laboratory processing of freshwater invertebrate samples collected from lakes, ponds, streams, and spring systems. Main duties encompass slide mounting of certain groups of aquatic invertebrates for identification, including Oligochaeta, Chironomidae, and Ceratopogonidae. Other duties include data entry, management of freshwater invertebrate databases and vouchered collections, assisting supervisor with production of reports, scientific publications, posters, and presentations, maintenance of laboratory equipment including meters, scales, analytical balances, ovens, and microscopes. Other duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work independently and in a research team environment.

Knowledge of taxonomic literature and techniques used to identify major groups of freshwater invertebrates.

Ability to write legibly and record data accurately.

Ability to complete assigned tasks on, or before, deadlines.

Ability to operate a computer with a Windows operating system.

Ability to use Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.

Ability to curate collections of freshwater invertebrates, including production of legible handwritten notes and labels for specimens.

Ability to enter recorded data into Excel spreadsheets.

Ability to manage Excel databases.

Minimum Qualifications:
4 years professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the biological sciences can substitute for the required experience.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The Freshwater Invertebrate Conservation Group is seeking a motivated individual to assist program coordinators with a State Wildlife Grant funded project to evaluate the life history, habitat preferences, environmental tolerances, and population structure of the Black Creek crayfish (Procambarus pictus). Responsibilities include: assisting Research Coordinator and project biologists with implementation of field work to assess populations of Black Creek crayfish; sample crayfish communities using qualitative and quantitative methods; species level taxonomic identifications of crayfish; measurement of variables related to stream morphology, habitat structure, and water quality according to Standard Operating Procedures; data entry, management, compilation, and curation of databases associated with crayfish collection, specimen observation, and environmental parameters; maintenance of project vehicles, sampling gear, and laboratory equipment; other duties as assigned by supervisor.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of field methods used to sample crayfish and other invertebrates.

  • Knowledge of current issues and literature in crayfish ecology.

  • Knowledge of current issues and literature in stream ecology, aquatic ecology, invertebrate zoology, invasive species ecology, and related fields.

  • Ability to identify crayfish to species level.

  • Ability to operate agency vehicles on unpaved roads, including conditions requiring four-wheel drive.

  • Ability to conduct aquatic field work outdoors for long hours in inclement conditions.
