Position Title:  OPS Fisheries & Wildlife Biological Scientist III

Salary:  $21.63/hour

Level of Education and Experience: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the biological or physical sciences is preferred and two years of professional biological experience in a field or laboratory program.  Or a master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the biological sciences.  Years of professional experience applicable to this position may substitute for the degree.

 

Description of Duties: 

The Division of Habitat & Species Conservation is comprised of six Sections and two offices. This position is located in the Imperiled Species Management Section.  This exciting opportunity is a 3-year term position with the possibility of extension focused on the Florida Panther Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) Program, falling under the purview of the FWC’s Panther Management Program. The incumbent will be based in southwest Florida and routine field work within the panther focus and expansion areas is expected.

The primary functions for this position will be to assist the PES coordinator with outreach to commercial cattle operations and large landowners, habitat assessments, and monitoring related to individual PES agreements. Duties include maintaining trail cameras and associated image data on enrolled lands and fostering long-term partnerships with private landowners. The incumbent will promote and maintain FWC’s Living with Panthers initiative, and outreach activities may extend to other audiences (e.g., homeowners, conservation groups, students, sportsmen). The position will assist with panther team activities including response to depredations, vehicle mortalities, and captures as needed.

The candidate must be a strong self-starter with excellent communication and public speaking skills who is outgoing, independent, motivated, professional, and able to work with a diverse array of people. This position may work weekends and after business hours. The majority of travel will be within south and central Florida, but statewide travel may occasionally be expected. This position may have the potential for partial telework.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Florida panther or puma biology and their habitats and a broad knowledge of wildlife science and ecology;

  • Knowledge of predator conflict minimization measures;

  • Ability to provide clear, timely, and effective updates to supervisor. 

  • Knowledge of private lands conservation and effective measures for working with private landowners;

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of upland and wetland habitat management and restoration;

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;

  • Ability to work independently and on teams;

  • Effectively communicate (orally and in writing) with peers and stakeholders;

  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments;

  • Proficiency in MS Office, MS SharePoint, Google Earth, and ArcGIS are necessary.

Land Conservation Manager - TNC (Bristol, FL)

The Land Conservation Manager is part of the Stewardship and Field Program (SAF) department of The Nature Conservancy’s Florida Business Unit. The position is based at Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve (ABRP) in Bristol, FL. ABRP is one of four statewide campus preserves included in TNC Florida’s Center for Conservation Initiatives (CCI) and is integral to CCI’s Stewardship and Education/Training initiatives.

 

This pivotal role provides leadership and support for restoration and land management efforts primarily within northern Florida. They collaborate closely with stakeholders to develop and execute natural resource management programs across various preserves. This includes activities such as wildland fire management, invasive species control, and forest restoration, all aimed at maintaining ecosystem health on both TNC and partner lands. Compliance with TNC’s, local, state, and federal requirements is paramount in all stewardship-related activities. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for ongoing professional development, staying abreast of wildland fire trainings and techniques to enhance skills and maintain professional fire certification credentials. This includes upper-level external partner relationships, extensive fire mentoring of staff, management of a substantial fire and land management fleet, and the full responsibilities of a National Wildfire Coordinating Group Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (NWCG RXB2). They also lead an Ecosystem Restoration Team and contribute to conservation planning at multiple scales, fostering cross-boundary learning and building relationships within the land management community.

Description

We are seeking motivated wildlife students each semester (spring, summer, and fall), for paid, semester-long wildlife internships. Our property is managed for cattle production, forestry, and other natural resources, including wildlife and hunting operations.

Opportunity: Wildlife interns will be exposed to practical game and non-game wildlife management activities, while experiencing first-hand how a large agricultural operation manages for multiple uses.

Projects: Each intern is assigned a major project to work on throughout the internship. These projects will be related to wildlife management, conservation, and lease management.

Interns might also participate in:
· Food Plot Management: Soil testing, mowing, disking, mapping, fencing, planting, and fertilizing
· Survey: Aerial wildlife surveys, spotlight surveys, camera surveys, and various other wildlife and/or fishery surveys.
· Maintenance and management: Manage feeders, weed control, mowing, prescribed burning, preparation of harvest logbooks, data entry and analysis, etc.

Timing and Schedule:Internships are 3 to 4 Months beginning in January, May, and August. Exact timing is flexible. Work schedules may be tailored to allow time for on-line courses.

Qualifications:
· College students majoring in Wildlife Biology, Range Management, Forestry, Environmental Science, or other related fields.
· Experience with Hunting, Fishing, and Game Management is preferred. Experience guiding or otherwise supporting hunting leases is a plus.
· Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
· Able to meet the physical requirements of the role as well as being willing/able to work outside in year-round weather conditions including heat, cold, wind and rain.
· Available to work 3 to 4 months beginning in January, May, or August of each year.
· Able to reliably get to and from the internship location, per the assigned schedule.

· Note: the intern is responsible for their own personal transportation.

Compensation and Benefits:
· Paid Internship with 45 hrs plus a week
· Housing free of charge (rent/utilities/wifi covered), on-property transportation, and
· Travel stipend for relocation costs.

APAFR Resilience Specialist - CFRPC (Bartow)

Avon Park Air Force Range Sentinel Landscape Resilience Specialist

The role of the Avon Park Air Force Range Sentinel Landscape (APAFRSL) Resilience Specialist is to

collaborate closely with partners and supporters to identify, implement and accelerate collaborative

projects to enhance resilience to protect military missions, community infrastructure, working

agricultural lands, and habitats. Resilience projects are ones that mitigate risks and increase resilience of

military installations and the landscapes that overlap mission footprints. The Resilience Specialist will

work in close coordination with the APAFR Sentinel Landscape Coordinator (Coordinator) at the Central

Florida Regional Planning Council (CFRPC), other staff at the CFRPC, the partners of the APAFR, and

military installations to develop collaborative, near-and long-term, resilience and adaptation project

proposals.

The primary role of the Resilience Specialist would be to assist the Natural Resources Conservation

Service (NRCS) and its partners in outreach and technical assistance to underserved and new landowners

within the APAFRSL and the FL Wildlife Corridor. The Specialist will work with the Coordinator to develop

projects, facilitate partner collaboration, pursue funding, and administer projects. At the discretion of

the Coordinator, the Resilience Specialist may work directly with NRCS staff on utilizing NRCS technical

and financial assistance programs. The Resilience Specialist would also assist with the APAFRSL Military

Installation Resilience Review (MIRR), FL Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lake Wales Ridge

Wildlife and Environmental Area, Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) proposals and

projects, APAFRSL Sentinel Landscape Implementation Plan resilience strategies and actions, recently

awarded America the Beautiful grants, and FL Department of Environmental Protection-awarded

vulnerability assessment grants for community resilience.

The APAFRSL Resilience Specialist will report to LegacyWorks Group (LWG) and the APAFRSL Coordinator

to identify adaptation and resilience needs. This position will be based within the CFRPC service area and

require travel throughout the APAFRSL area, with additional regional and national travel as well. This

position will have a hybrid work arrangement – up to three days a week in the CFRPC office at 555 East

Church Street, Bartow, Florida 33830.

Northwest Florida Sentinel Landscape Resilience Specialist

The role of the Northwest Florida Sentinel Landscape (NWFSL) Resilience Specialist is to collaborate closely with partners and supporters to identify, implement and accelerate collaborative projects to enhance climate resilience to protect military missions, community infrastructure and habitats. Climate resilience projects are ones that mitigate coastal and inland risks and increase resilience of military installations and the landscapes that overlap mission footprints. The Resilience Specialist will work in close coordination with the NWFSL Coordinator, the NWFSL Private Lands and Natural Systems Coordinator, the NWFSL Working Groups, the partners of the NWFSL and military installations to develop collaborative, near-and long-term, climate resilience and adaptation project proposals.

The NWFSL Resilience Specialist will report to the LegacyWorks Group (LWG or LegacyWorks) and the NWFSL Coordinator, with Defenders of Wildlife, to identify climate adaptation and resilience needs. The specialist will work with NWFSL Coordinator to develop projects and pursue complimentary funding streams. At the discretion of the NWFSL Coordinator, the Resilience Specialist may work directly with Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) staff on how to utilize NRCS technical and financial assistance programs. The Resilience Specialist will assist the NWFSL Coordinator in updating the implementation plans and other documents for resilience issues. This position will be based in Northwest Florida and require travel throughout Northwest Florida with additional regional and national travel.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Support the NWFSL Coordinator and LWG to advance resilience planning and actions.

  • Assess and record the state of resilience and climate adaptation planning, projects and priorities of federal, state, and local government agencies, military installations, NGOs, and communities in the NWFSL including coordination with on-going planning/implementation of the Northwest Florida Military Installation Resilience Review (MIRR)

  • Monitor state, federal climate and private climate resiliency funding opportunities, solicit concepts, convene and support partnerships with military installations, government agencies and others, coordinate and support the development and submission of at least six collaborative proposals for near-term resilience and climate adaptation projects before the end of 2024

  • Identify, recommend, and pursue funding for individual partner actions that support implementation plans, including administration of grants and contracts. Solicit project ideas and develop proposals for near-term resilience and climate adaptation projects and potential landscape resilience-related scientific research needs. that could be implemented in the first 6-12 months to take advantage of newly available funding

  • Coordinate with and support the NWFSL Coordinator and coordinate the NWFSL Climate Resilience Work Group. Work effectively with partners and supporters of the NWFSL Partnership, the NWFSL Private Lands and Natural Systems Stewardship Work Group, the Southeast Regional Partnership  for Planning and Sustainability (SERPPAS) and its Coastal Resilience and Regional Adaptation Work Group, the Department of Defense Resilience and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program; the Sentinel Landscapes Federal Coordinating Committee and military installations to advance and synchronize resilience coordination, planning and actions within the NWFSL

  • At the discretion of the NWFSL coordinator, participate in NRCS State Technical Committees and/or engage at relevant events, conferences, and meetings

  • Identify climate resilience issues affecting historically underserved stakeholders within the NWFSL; recommend actions to mitigate impacts

  • Assist the NWFSL coordinator in developing reporting metrics and standards for landscapes including climate resilience

  • Record and report quarterly and annual the resilience and climate adaptation accomplishments with NWFSL to the NWFSL Coordinator and the NWFSL Climate Resilience Work Group

Hours & Pay

This position is full-time exempt of 40 hours per week.

Salary range is $62,000 to $70,000 based on relevant qualifications and experience.
